Effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding management of first stage of labour among nursing students
Abstract : This quasi-experimental study evaluated the effectiveness of a Structured Teaching Program (STP) on knowledge regarding the management of the first stage of labour among 3rd year B.Sc. (Nursing) students at ASRAM College of Nursing, Eluru.
Background : Labour is a complex physiological process, and disruptions can result in complications such as prolonged labour, sepsis, uterine rupture, and increased maternal morbidity and mortality, emphasizing the need for effective education in its management.
Objectives : The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the STP in enhancing students’ knowledge and to examine the association between pre-test knowledge levels and selected demographic variables.
Methods : A total of 30 students were selected through simple random sampling for a one-group pre-test and post-test design.
Results : Following the STP, a significant improvement in knowledge was observed, with post-test scores significantly higher than pre-test scores (p<0.05). The paired t-test confirmed the effectiveness of the STP. No significant association was found between pre-test knowledge levels and demographic variables (Chi-square test, p > 0.05).
Conclusion : These findings demonstrate that the STP effectively enhanced the nursing students’ knowledge of first-stage labour management, making it a valuable educational tool regardless of demographic differences.
