Assessment of the caregivers’ family management and quality of life in children with chronic disease

Abstract : Quality of Life (QoL) is a key component of healthcare for chronically ill children and their families. A descriptive study was undertaken to assess the caregiver’s family management and quality of those life of with chronic diseases.

The investigator adopted descriptive survey research and selected 100 caregivers of children with chronic diseases attending follow up in Pediatric OPD using non-probability purposive sampling technique.

The finding of the study revealed that the caregivers of children obtained a mean score of 126.09 (SD=11.14) on family management. The quality of life of children had a mean score of 70.68 (SD= 20.23). Correlation analysis revealed that easy family management of the caregivers had a positive correlation (r=0.64) with the quality of life of children with chronic diseases. On the contrary, difficulty in family management negatively correlated (r =-0.71) with the quality of life of the children.

There is significant association of quality of life in children and  selected demographic variables at 0.05 level of significance. From this study it can be seen that caregivers could have easy family management as it will allow children with chronic illness to receive decent care from their family members that will help them to improve their quality of life.

Interventions (educational programme) can be introduced by healthcare workers to aware the caregiver about the family management of children with chronic diseases so that there can be a good quality of life a child can lead for the rest of  their life.
