Postnatal health status and associated factors among mothers admitted in postnatal ward

Abstract : The post-natal period is crucial in a woman’s life. A descriptive survey was conducted at the postnatal ward of Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata and NRS Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata to assess physical and psychological health status, to identify associated factors affecting health status, to find out the relationship between psychological health and associated factors in postnatal women and to find out the association between physical health and psychological health status with demographic variables.

The conceptual framework adopted for the study was based on Roy’s adaptation theory. Onehundred fifteen participants were selected by simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using semi-structured and structured interview schedule. Record analysis and post-natal health assessment proforma and post-partum distress measure scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis.

The study findings revealed that out of 115 participants 11.30% had hypertension, 69.57% had episiotomy wound and 13.91% of post-natal mothers had significant post-partum distress.

The study results also revealed that personal factors [mean % (68.57)] were affecting health status mostly. A moderate positive correlation was present between psychological health status and associated factors [r=0.52(df=113), p<0.00001].

Episiotomy wound was significantly associated with age and parity, dehydration with post-natal period and psychological health status with baby’s birth weight. The study findings have implications for nursing services and education.
